First Congregational Church of Westfield will host a forum on immigration issues on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the sanctuary at 125 Elmer Street in Westfield.  This event is free and open to the public.

Titled “Immigration Policy: Current Status, Concerns and Considerations,” the forum is sponsored by the Westfield-Mountainside Clergy Association.  It will feature a presentation by immigration attorney Sheila Moreira, Esq., with commentary from members of the clergy association.  Among the topics to be addressed are DACA (the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), the so-called Dreamers, and other issues surrounding current and proposed legislation. A question and discussion period will follow.

Sheila Moreira has practiced immigration law for 14 years. She has presented at numerous “know your rights” workshops for immigrants and taught classes in Constitutional law, political science and history. She works with Roselle-based non-profit group Adelante Alliance, which supports the local Hispanic community through advocacy, educational programs, community-organizing and enrichment projects.

Ms. Moreira graduated from the College of New Jersey and earned her law degree from American University.  She also holds masters degrees in Political Science and American Studies from Rutgers University.
“A few months ago, our association discussed how we might be a more regular presence in serving the Greater Westfield-Mountainside area as an entity,” said Rev. Dr. Mark Boyea, senior minister of First Congregational Church.  “One of the ways we believe that aspiration can be best met is by providing this type of public forum on a regular basis - opportunities for people to receive and explore vital information about complex public issues, as well as insights into understanding those issues from an ecumenical spiritual perspective.”

The Westfield-Mountainside Clergy Association is made up of over a dozen religious leaders representing houses of worship in the local community.  Among those in attendance will be Rev. Dr. Mark Boyea; Father Anthony Randazzo, Pastor of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church; and Rev. Kevin Clark, Pastor of Bethel Baptist Church, as well as others to be confirmed.  For additional information on the event, please contact the First Congregational Church office at 908-233-2494.

February 14, 2018

I read with interest in a local newspaper regarding the Union county democrat party political infighting for their “county chair” selection.  There were 2 letters juxtaposed, each one listing supporters of either Senator Scutari or Fanwood Mayor Mahr, who are the two main people vying for the “boss” position.

Although I am a democrat I am not a committee ...
