LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP, NJ - The Long Beach Township Beach Patrol issued a note of warning on their Facebook page about digging large holes and ditches in the sand while visiting the shore.

"You're here to relax and kick back,  leave the ditch digging to the pros. Usually out of view of lifeguards, we find a wild number of these projects when we are patrolling the beaches,” said the police post.

Chief Harrison snapped the photo above while on patrol.  Just after asking the beachgoer to fill in the hole, it started to collapse.   The man was fine but this is the reason officials ask visitors to not to dig large holes.

According to LBT Beach Patrol, this is a seriously dangerous, potentially life-threatening activity. There have been numerous incidents of sand hole and sand tunnel collapses on local beaches that have had catastrophic results.

The police have requested beachgoers to report any instances of this type of digging to the lifeguards or beach patrol, as doing so may save a life.
