Baseball Reaches Union County Tournament Finals, Solid Lineup Carrying Team

The Arthur L. Johnson High School Crusaders varsity baseball team has produced all season long. The fourth-seeded Crusaders punched their ticket to the 2019 Union County Tournament Finals with a 10-7 win over Summit HS Saturday afternoon at Kean University.

They will take on sixth-seeded Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS in the finals round Tuesday night at Kean University at 6:00 p.m.

Saturday afternoon at Kean University featured adversity at times for Johnson against Summit. The Crusaders trailed the Hilltoppers by scores of 3-0, 5-2 and 7-6 before a comeback that featured a four-run bottom of the sixth inning putting them ahead for good, securing the win.

Within the week, Johnson defeated Union Catholic 5-0 in the UCT Quarterfinals round on May 6, rallied from behind to top New Providence on the road 11-8 on May 7 and lost to Union 3-0 on May 9.

In the win on May 6, junior Max Carmino went 6 1/3 innings, while junior Tyler Washington and sophomore Kyle Adorno both drove in two runs. Junior Patrick Brennan hit a home run in the win.

In the game against New Providence, Johnson trailed 4-0 through three innings and trailed 4-2 through five innings. They scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore Joe Greenbush and junior Max Carmino both drove in two runs the win.

On the season, Johnson has received production from every part of the lineup. Junior Saul Lopez leads the team with 32 hits (three doubles, three triples), 16 RBIs and a team-leading .457 batting average. Sophomore Kyle Adorno has contributed 30 hits (two doubles) and 12 RBIs.

As a team, the Crusaders have scored 137 runs and hope to finish the regular season off on a high note with the state tournament approaching in about a week and a half.

Softball Captures Huge Senior Day Win, Prepare for State Tournament

The Arthur L. Johnson High School Crusaders varsity softball team honored their senior players prior to their Thursday game against Metuchen HS. Bailey Rosenmeier, Victoria Zatko, Nicole Pecoraro, Hannah Brogan, Gianna Albin and Sienna Sabba were honored in a pregame ceremony for their years of hard work and dedication towards the program over the four years.

Rosenmeier delivered a walk-off RBI single, scoring Brogan to win the game as Johnson prevailed 8-7 in eight innings.

The Crusaders defeated Mt. St. Mary 13-1 Saturday morning at Brewer School. The team was led by four players recording two hits each. Junior Megan Tinger had a home run and collected five RBIs in the win.

Hannah Brogan and juniors Lia D’Angelo and Julia Schelhorn all drove in two runs as well in the win.

On the season, senior Victoria Zatko, who recorded her 100th career hit on April 10, leads Johnson with 26 hits (seven home runs, ten doubles) and 26 RBIs and a .433 batting average. Junior Megan Tinger has a .451 batting average on the year, including 23 hits (seven doubles, one home run) and has driven in 18 RBIs.

Bailey Rosenmeier has a .228 batting average on the year, along with 13 hits (four doubles, two triples) and 14 RBIs.

Lacrosse Finishes Regular Season With Win on Senior Day, Ready for Upcoming State Tournament

The Arthur L. Johnson High School varsity lacrosse team completed their regular season on a high note, winning four of their last five games.

The first two wins of the stretch include wins over Oratory Prep (9-3 win on April 27 in UCT play and 5-3 on May 6), a 12-11 win over Newark Academy on May 8 and a 16-1 victory over Jonathan Dayton HS on Senior Day on Saturday, May 11.

Junior Evan Parenti (40 goals, 14 assists) and seniors Brandon Hund (32 goals, 24 assists) and Eric Bretz (28 goals, 29 assists) have powered Johnson on the offense, while senior goaltender Josh Hill has made 170 saves in net.

They will begin in the state tournament this upcoming Wednesday, May 15, with a likely trip to Haddonfield HS for the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey, Group 1 playoffs.
