CLARK, NJ – Mayor Sal Bonaccorso and the Clark Town Council are speaking out on behalf of town residents about the proposed development by Hartz Mountain Industries Inc. at 750 Walnut Avenue in Cranford.

During the July 3 Council Meeting, Bonaccorso put forward a resolution pdfaddressing the application by Hartz Mountain to develop a residential site with over 900 apartments on a parcel of land that sits on the border of Clark.

Bonaccorso stressed this resolution is designed only to express Clark’s opposition to the development.  He indicated it is not about shaming anyone in Cranford.    “For the record this is in no way a resolution to embarrass the Cranford government, we are not trying to do that, from what I understand they are not hot on this either,” said Bonaccorso.   “We will be opposing this for numerous reasons; traffic congestion, safety, it’s against our master plan, we believe this to be spot zoning and it is going to put a burden on our emergency services in town.”

In his address, the mayor spoke about the hardship this development would have on traffic on Walnut Avenue, Raritan Road, Valley Road, Central Avenue, the  traffic circle by the Garden State Parkway and even into Westfield Avenue.

Bonaccorso recognized that towns have the right to develop their communities, but he expressed his concern about the proposal put forward.    “The number is outrageous that Hartz Mountain is asking for and we are going to ask them, (Cranford) please do not agree to the zoning change, that is what this resolution is about,” said Bonaccorso.

The Town Council and Bonaccorso have also started a petition.  They are urging Clark citizens 18 and older to sign it.  Residents are invited to Room 30 in Town Hall on July 10 and 13 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. to sign the petition.   Bonaccorso said he and members of the council will be on hand at various times to man the room so residents can join in expressing concern about the potential development.   If daytime hours are more convenient, residents can go to the Clerk's office, Room 28 at Clark's Town Hall Monday thru Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 sign it.

Town Council members will also be going door to door asking residents to sign the petition.   Citizens are being asked to spread the word to neighbors, including those that are not on social media or the internet.

Bonaccorso closed his comments recognizing the road ahead for the Town of Cranford.  “Again, no disrespect to Mayor Hannen, they have a tough job …we know what it’s like, it is a major burden to deal with the uncertainty,” said Bonaccorso.
