WESTFIELD, NJ — C.J. Reycraft Jr., owner and chef of Butcher Burgers in Downtown Westfield, recently began creating specialty milkshakes “garnished” with desserts of their own.
A maple shake with maple syrup ice cream, whipped cream, walnuts and caramel is topped with a Belgian waffle. The pumpkin pie shake made with caramel, spiced pumpkin ice cream, whipped cream and pumpkin seeds and topped with — what else? — a slice of pumpkin pie.
These craving-quenching shakes are specials at the moment, but may make an appearance on Butcher Burgers’ new dessert menu, which is in development now, Reycraft said.
“Pumpkin pie was inspired by a can of pumpkin purée that caught my eye in the store. I was like, I need to make a milkshake happen with that and let my creativity go,” the classically trained French chef said. “The waffle came about because we had a jug of syrup and Jennifer, our manager, was like, ‘Can you make a maple milkshake?’ Then I was thinking about how to elevate that with the garnish and the waffle felt like a perfect fit.”
Like the s’mores (chocolate ganache, graham cracker ice cream and torched marshmallows), buttercup (Reese’s peanut butter ice cream, chocolate ganache and peanut butter cup pieces) and Nutella (vanilla ice cream, Nutella and toasted hazelnuts) specialty shakes at Butcher Burgers, these new shakes are $8 apiece.
What else will Reycraft start serving?
“Stay tuned to see what ideas pop into my crazy brain next,” he said.
Butcher Burgers is located at 39 Elm St. Closed Mondays.
