Advocates for the Preeclampsia Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing maternal and infant illness and death due to preeclampsia, a life-threatening disorder of pregnancy, made strides on Sunday, May 17 at beautiful Oak Ridge Park in Clark, N.J. to raise awareness at the annual Promise Walk for Preeclampsia™. The New Jersey walkers, who came from all over Central and Northern New Jersey, joined thousands of other participants around the country that are walking in May and June to support innovative research and raise public awareness about the warning signs and symptoms of preeclampsia.
The 5th annual Cranford area event has raised $39,000 to date and had 385 participants, making an impact in their local community. The walk day consisted of a family-friendly walk, refreshments, raffle prizes, and opening ceremony speeches by Trashaun (and JP) Powell (of Somerset), this year’s brave and inspirational Mission Family, guest speaker Dr. Sean Keeler of New Jersey Perinatal Associates, and United States Congressman Leonard Lance, as well as preeclampsia survivors and mother-daughter walk coordinator team Stephanie and Marissa Steiner (of Springfield).
“We are incredibly thankful for the overwhelming support this community has shown for the families impacted by this devastating disease,” said Volunteer Walk Coordinator, Stephanie Steiner.
The Promise Walk for Preeclampsia, with the tagline “Making Strides, Delivering Hope,” makes a clear connection with the mission of the Preeclampsia Foundation. That “promise” includes finding a cure, supporting families, and ensuring education and awareness for all pregnant women. The event’s national goal is to raise $500,000.
The support for May as Preeclampsia Awareness Month from the state of New Jersey has been strong, with the receipt of local proclamations from the NJ Senate, NJ Governor, Clark, Cranford, Glen Ridge, Livingston, Montclair, Morristown, Somerset, Springfield, Summit, Union and Westfield.
“This New Jersey Promise Walk has made great strides in awareness and fundraising for this cause,” said Preeclampsia Foundation Director of Community Relations Laney Poye. “We are very excited to continue the momentum in New Jersey for years to come under Stephanie Steiner’s extremely capable guidance.”
