News From Nearby: Car Thieves Discover 15-Year Old Boy in Backseat During Theft

UNION, NJ – A mother, father and their 15-year old son were left unharmed, but shaken, after their car was stolen with the 15-year old still inside on Sunday afternoon.  The parents, who were driving a friend’s Honda Passport, parked the car at a bank on the 1900 block of Morris Avenue and went inside to use the ATM.  They left the vehicle running with their 15-year old son in the backseat when suddenly two men jumped into the car and drove away, heading eastbound on Morris Avenue. 

According to Union Police Capt. Scott Breslow, the men, driving erratically, then realized that there was someone else in the back of the car.  They stopped the car and ordered the child out.  The 15-year old got out of the car near the Lowes’ store on Morris Avenue and ran back to the bank.

When the parents came out of the bank after about 3 minutes, they discovered their car and son were missing.  Their cell phones were left inside the car, so they asked a passerby for help.  The passerby drove the parents to police headquarters, where they made their report.

Detectives then responded to the bank and the parents were reunited with their son.  The 1998 Honda was later found on the 200 block of Broadway in Newark, where it was abandoned with heavy damage, appearing to have hit a tree.  Union Police Crime Scene Unit Detectives responded to Newark to conduct an investigation of the car.

The juvenile could only describe the two suspects as black males in their early twenties.  The crime is being considered a carjacking because a person was in the car at the time of the theft.

Cranford Man Dies after Wrong-Way Crash on Route 9

WOODBRIDGE, NJ – A Cranford man died after his car collided with another vehicle on Route 9 on Sunday.
