UNION, NJ — The Second Annual Heroes on the Court 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament, sponsored by the Hispanic Law Enforcement Association of Union County, Inc., takes place Sunday April 24, 2016, at 4p.m., at the Harwood Arena, on the campus of Kean University, 1000 Morris Avenue, Union.

The tournament, which will be comprised of law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency response personnel, benefits scholarships at Kean University, Union County College, and two newly formed memorial scholarships.

The success of last year’s event enabled the HLEAUC to award seven scholarships. This year the organization has added two memorial scholarships. The first is named in honor of Elizabeth Police Officer Walter T. Bohorquez, who passed away on Oct. 19, 2015, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Officer Bohorquez was an Army veteran, and served with the Elizabeth Police Department for 28 years. He was a proud member of the Elizabeth Honor Guard and the Hispanic Law Enforcement Association. He was dedicated to serving the community and his fellow officers.

The second memorial scholarship is named in honor of Port Authority Police Officer Elise C. Bastardo, who passed away on Feb. 12, 2016, as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident. Officer Bastardo would have turned 25 years old this month. She graduated from Rutgers University Cum Laude in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Criminal Justice and a minor in Criminology. While in the 113th Port Authority Police Academy Class, she was selected to be a platoon leader and was assigned to the Newark Airport Command. Even in death, Officer Elise Bastardo has touched the lives of others with the donation of her organs through the Sharing Network. Through this scholarship the HLEAUC will honor her and all that she exemplified in giving back to others.

These scholarships will be awarded based on the criteria set forth and will be under the HLEAUC Shields of Dreams Foundation. This foundation was established last year, in memory of the late Elizabeth Police Detective Edward M. Shields (3/16/54 to 4/14/11). The mission of the Shields of Dreams Foundation is to provide scholarship and mentorship programs to those in the community who wish to pursue a career in law enforcement and/or public safety.

Ticket donation for this event is $10/person and children 11 years old and under are free. All proceeds benefit the scholarships under the Shields of Dreams Foundation. Members of the law enforcement community and first responders who wish to participate, and all those who would like to attend or donate, go to www.hleauc.org, or contact HLEAUC President Demondo at 908-219-9109.

I read with interest in a local newspaper regarding the Union county democrat party political infighting for their “county chair” selection.  There were 2 letters juxtaposed, each one listing supporters of either Senator Scutari or Fanwood Mayor Mahr, who are the two main people vying for the “boss” position.

Although I am a democrat I am not a committee ...
