RAHWAY, NJ - According to a statement sent out by the City of Rahway on Tuesday, Mayor Samson D. Steinman began a medical leave on March 20 to "address series of personal issues that began during childhood.”

According to the statement, the mayor will be in a “therapeutic setting which will allow him to focus on healing."

The announcement came after the mayor’s involvement in a recent auto accident, the report said.  Published reports indicate an accident on Saturday was the mayor’s second in seven months.

"The Mayor's decision was brought on, in part, by his recent auto accident that fortunately did not cause any personal injury," according to the statement. "The Mayor volunteered and passed a sobriety test, yet the event reinforced the Mayor's commitment to focus on his health."

The mayor asked for respect of his privacy, the statement said.
