SUMMIT, NJ - Atlantic Health System's Overlook Medical Center recently celebrated the nation's first 'National Hospitalist Day', which recognizes the talented, dedicated 'hospitalists' -- a term that refers to physicians whose practice emphasizes providing care for hospitalized patients.
'Hospitalists' focus on the unique aspects of a patient's needs during the hospital stay.
“Complexity has increased for hospitalized patients. 'Hospitalists' bring their expertise to assure timely, quality-driven care and to provide the best experience possible," said Dr. Sharen Anghel, Director, Atlantic Medical Group Hospital Medicine at Overlook Medical Center. “They coordinate with all team members, including the patient’s primary care physician, specialists, and nursing.”
'Hospitalists' play a critical role in care continuum, and there has been an explosive growth of 'hospitalists' since the late 1990s. Overlook Medical Center's hospitalist program began in 2000 and served only 15 patients. Today, they see a combined average of over 200 patients per day.
At Overlook Medical Center, there are 51 physicians and Advanced Practice Clinicians spanning adult, pediatrics, and obstetrics.
