Palm Sunday Begins Holy Week at First Congregational Church

WESTFIELD – First Congregational Church invites visitors of all ages to observe Holy Week with special services beginning on Palm Sunday, March 20, and continuing through Easter Sunday on March 27, in the sanctuary at 125 Elmer Street in Westfield.

The Palm Sunday service on March 20 will begin with a traditional Palm Processional.  Children are invited to meet in the Chapel Lounge prior to the 10 a.m. worship service to receive palms and join in the processional. 

The annual cake auction hosted by the middle high students will be held during coffee hour immediately following the service.  Raffle tickets will be sold for a chance to win any of the fanciful homemade cakes, with all proceeds going to Heifer International, a humanitarian organization dedicated to ending world hunger.

             Maundy Thursday will be observed on March 24 at 7:30 p.m. with a candlelight service recalling the Last Supper and Jesus’ final hours through scripture, hymns, reflection and Communion.   A Good Friday service of meditation and reflection will be held on March 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the church’s Patton Auditorium.

            Easter Sunday worship celebrations will be held on March 27 at 9 and 11 a.m.  Both services will feature music for organ and brass quartet, including Widor’s “Toccata” and Handel’s “Hallelujah” chorus with guest soloist, soprano Meredith Hoffmann-Thomson.  A one-room schoolhouse and infant care will be available at both services.  Rev. Dr. Mark Boyea, senior minister, will deliver the morning’s message.

            First Congregational Church is a member of the United Church of Christ.  The sanctuary is accessible a wheelchair ramp and features a newly-installed hearing loop for the hearing impaired.   For further information, please call the church office at (908) 233-2494 or visit their website at www.fccofwestfield.org.

Cranford Man Dies after Wrong-Way Crash on Route 9

WOODBRIDGE, NJ – A Cranford man died after his car collided with another vehicle on Route 9 on Sunday.

Thomas McHugh, 88, was driving north in the southbound fast lane on Route 9, where he crashed head-on into another vehicle. On impact, one of the cars caught fire, according to Sgt. Jim Chessere of the Woodbridge Police Department.
