“Reading for Miles" is an exciting program that encourages first graders at Frank K. Hehnly School to do extra reading at home. The students bring home a monthly log to keep track of their reading. They return the log to school at the end of each month. Each book or chapter read is equivalent to one mile of “travel”.

Students track their progress on a map in the classroom. Predetermined destinations are set up for the students to travel to. Once the first graders reach their destinations throughout the school year, they will celebrate with a themed reading party.

Our travels include stops to:

  • Orlando, FL (Disney Day)

Each stop will include a geography lesson about the area traveled as well as appropriate literature to read.
