METUCHEN, NJ - Saint Joseph High School recently hosted its annual mathematics competition for students in grades seven and eight.  There were 228 students from 20 different towns and 27 schools in attendance.  Saint Joseph students were on hand to host the competitors and to assist teachers in grading.

The competition required students to complete an exam consisting of 16 questions of various point values. Topics included algebra, geometry and other miscellaneous elementary mathematics.

Churchill Junior High School in East Brunswick was this year's first place winner. Placing in second and third were Woodrow Wilson Middle School in Edison and Oak Hill Academy in Lincroft.  Top schools were awarded plaques to recognize their achievement.

Joshua Yi was the first place student. He was awarded a plaque and an Amazon Echo Dot. Second place resulted in a tie and between Rachel Ai and Michael A. Lyga.  Both students were also recognized for their achievement.

St.  Joseph High School started this competition in 2007. Since that year, more than 2,700  students have attended. The event is open to schools around New Jersey and gives parents and students a chance to check out St. Joseph High School.

“It’s a great way to introduce eighth graders to the math department and school in general," Saint Joseph math teacher Roel Mercado said. "Parents also get an inside look at Saint Joe’s and our rigorous academic program.”
