TRENTON, NJ -- Mayor Al Smith attended a gun safety package bill signing ceremony at the Richard J. Hughes Justice Complex in Trenton on Wednesday with Governor Phil Murphy. Mayor Smith joined a bipartisan group of local and state elected officials, as well as members of Moms Demand Action of Union County, at the event.

“As a leader in Sandy Hook Promise, I was happy to accept the Governor’s invitation of the signing of three gun safety bills I have been supporting with Sandy Hook Promise,” Mayor Al Smith said. “The most important bill signed into law today was the Extreme Risk Protective Order Act of 2018, which is designed to keep guns out of the hands of people who are determined to pose a significant risk of personal injury to themselves or others by possessing or owing a firearm. As I have said repeatedly, if this legislation existed in Parkland Florida, that tragedy may have been prevented.”

“I will continue to work in a bipartisan manner to promote Sandy Hook Promise initiatives including Know the Signs program to reduce student bullying and create a more inclusive school environment,” Mayor Smith added. “In discussions with superintendent Dr. Margaret Hayes, Know the Signs programs should be implemented in our school district starting in the Fall of 2018.”
