Special Needs Youth Recreation Programs Set For This Summer

Summit Community Programs will be hosting a number of summer recreation programs for youth with special needs to help youth maintain skills during summer break, have fun with peers, and develop potential new interests.

In our Let’s Pretend group (ages 3-5), children develop play and social skills including pretend, sharing, compromise, social language using coordinated play, role play, social stories and other techniques.  Children will practice specific social skills through normal play activities and participation with peers. Group meets 9:15-10:00 am.

In Play and Learn group (ages 6-7), children rotate through different normal play activities with peers, learning social skills through mini-lessons including character analysis, problem solving, role playing and play. Children also learn cooperation, compromise, self-control, reading others, frustration control and conversation. Group meets 10:00-10:45 am.

In Kidz Club (grades 3-5), children learn essential friendship skills for school recess, gym activities, play dates, and other group play, such as listening, following directions and game rules, being a good sport, playing fair, working with others, sustaining play, positive communication such as speaking on topic, while learning new games and building confidence. Group meets 10:45-11:30 am.

In our summer Dance and Movement camp, children (ages 5-8) participate in a unique learning environment as they move with use of traditional music and songs, creative movement, dance and rhythms, games and props that provide sensory stimulation, art, and storytelling.   Group meets 10:10-10:55 am.

In summer Mini Yoga camp, children (ages 8-12) use breathing and other calming techniques plus fun poses and games to learn respect for themselves and others while improving body awareness and ability to relax.   Group meets Sundays at 11:00-11:45 am.

In Move and Dance and Movement camp for older youth (ages 10-15) will have those youth having a blast learning new ways to move to their favorite music while improving flexibility and coordination and provide sensory stimulation. Group meets Sundays 11:50 am - 12:35 pm.

Saturday groups meet July 8, 22 and 29 and are led by Eileen O’Neill, Behaviorist. Sunday groups will meet on July 9, 16 and 23 and are led by Michele Goldin, Dance and Movement Therapist. All groups meet at the Summit Community Center, 100 Morris Avenue and are assisted by our teen peer volunteers who help our kids participate and have fun. The enrollment fee is $64 for each Saturday group and $30 for each Sunday group.

TryCAN is a collaboration of local communities offering an array of recreation programs for youth with unique or special needs or those who need specific accommodations. Residents from any community are welcome!
