SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and Twin City Pharmacy & Surgical of South Plainfield, being a Good Neighbor Pharmacy, will be giving out free home colon and rectal cancer testing kits. The free ‘Test for Life’ kits, which will be available throughout the month, are suggested for men and women age 50 and older.

“By giving away free, easy to use tests we are hoping to bring awareness to the importance of detecting colorectal cancer in its early stages,” said Sandy Cassio, who runs the Park Avenue pharmacy with her cousin Tom Cassio and brother-in-law Bill Ashnault.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colorectal cancer – cancer of the colon or rectum – affects both men and women. It is also the second leading cancer-related killer in the United States and is the third most common cancer in men and women. However, if found early, colorectal cancer can be treated; it is recommended that adults begin getting tested for colorectal cancer starting at age 50.

“Colorectal cancer can be prevented and prompt actions can stop the cancer before it starts. Screening for colon cancer has been proven to save lives, which is especially important since in its early stages there are no symptoms,” said Cassio.

“Many people don't get tested because they don't believe they are at risk, are not aware of available testing options or they believe they can't afford the cost of being tested,” added Cassio. “Screenings, like colonoscopies, along with the easy to use take home kits we have available to Twin City can help identify the early signs of colorectal cancer.”

The free Test for Life kits will be available at Twin City Pharmacy & Surgical, located at 1708 Park Avenue in South Plainfield, on a first come, first come basis throughout March. There is a one kit per person limit.

“Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in the US and the second leading cause of cancer death. It doesn’t have to be this way,” said Cassio. “Through screening, it is one of the most preventable diseases.  Stop in today to pick up your free screening kit. By learning and sharing – we can make a huge impact in our community.”
