Union County College Hires New Dean of Humanities

CRANFORD – Dr. Melissa R. Sande is the new Dean of Humanities for Union County College. Dr. Sande joined Union in the fall of 2013 as a full-time instructor of English. She has more than ten years of teaching experience and has previously served as a program coordinator, writing tutor, and an adjunct instructor.

As the Dean of Humanities, Dr. Sande will be responsible for the supervision and evaluation of the Division’s full-time faculty members and staff, the approval of all faculty schedules, and will advocate for the issues, initiatives, goals, and needs of the Division. Dr. Sande will support the faculty in the development and design of new programs as well as the enhancement of the Division’s existing curriculum. Dr. Sande is the Division’s representative and will work with other College divisions to ensure that the needs of Union students are being met in all academic areas. The Humanities Division includes majors and courses in English, communications, theater arts, visual arts, graphic design, modern languages, journalism and public relations, and liberal arts.

Prior to her arrival at Union, Dr. Sande served as a Writing Associate at the University of New Haven where she instructed newly designed composition and rhetoric courses that focused on effective college-level writing. She worked as an adjunct instructor at Suffolk County Community College where she taught introductory composition and literature courses. As an adjunct instructor at Borough of Manhattan Community College, she served as an instructor of developmental English and reading and taught introductory level English courses.

Dr. Sande earned her Ph.D. in English, General Literature and Rhetoric from Binghamton University. She holds a Master of Arts in Literature from Brooklyn College, City University of New York and her Bachelor of Arts in Literature and Journalism, with a minor in sociology, from Purchase College, State University of New York. Dr. Sande is also fluent in Spanish.

Dr. Sande is an excellent instructor and is well known within the College community for her skills in the classroom. I congratulate her on this new administrative position and look forward to the initiatives she will spearhead for her Division,” stated Union’s President Dr. Margaret M. McMenamin.
