CLARK, NJ – Students, parents and families of Valley Road Elementary School are coming together to help a fellow Clark family, demonstrating the true meaning of community.

This past June, Monika Guzman was diagnosed with Stage IV stomach cancer.  Guzman has undergone several rounds of chemotherapy but is looking to alternative treatments, specifically a clinic in Mexico, to try and beat the odds.

Friends started a GoFundMe page for Guzman over the summer to help the financial burden caused by the expenses of treatment and hospital stays.  Thanks to neighbors, coworkers, friends and even strangers, $21,900 of the $100,000 goal has been raised.  But there is more work to be done.

To help with the expenses, a car wash was held at Valley Road School on October 8th, raising over $1,600 for the family.  This event was sponsored by the K-Kids and their advisors Paula Spence, Kim Belverio, and Sue Dzurovcik.  Teachers, students, and parents lent their assistance in washing cars making the day a success.

Guzman stopped by the car wash, taking a picture with the K-Kids and their advisors.  Guzman expressed her gratitude for everything the school and the town has done to help their family.

One of Valley Road School’s teachers, along with her husband, were also able to secure airline tickets for Guzman and her husband to travel to Mexico for treatment.  The Valley Road School Social Committee is also collecting food for the family as the children’s grandfather is caring for them while the parents are out of the country.

Looking to support the Guzman family?  Visit the GoFundMe page or contact Guidance Counselor Sarah Badillo or any of the K-Kids advisors at (732) 388-7900.  To reach someone via email, please contact sbadillo@clarkschools.org  or jbeltramba@clarkschool.org.
