CLARK, NJ – Third grade students at Valley Road Elementary School recently participated in a Monster Exchange with third graders at Essex Town School in Vermont.
The Monster Exchange is designed to encourage the development of reading and writing skills while integrating technology into the classroom curriculum.
The students in each classroom used a digital drawing tool application to design an original monster. The students exchanged written descriptions of their creations and then recreated their partner's monster without ever looking at the "real thing".
Teacher Nicole Czarnecki created a Google site for this collaboration process. Students met their partners and exchanged their original monster drawings with the redrawn monsters via video chat.
The project promoted the use of language skills, such as adjectives, explicit sentences, and ordering of thought processes. The students were challenged both artistically and cognitively.
