WESTFIELD, NJ — A vehicle left running while unattended was stolen from a gas station on Central Avenue Monday, police said.

A New Providence man told police that a thief stole his 2019 gray Dodge Charger valued at about $45,000 from the Amoco, Sgt. Michael Walsh said. The theft happened shortly before 5:32 p.m., police said.

“The vehicle was left running and unattended while the owner entered the Amoco Convenience store,” Walsh said. “While inside the store, the owner observed an unknown male in a dark hooded jacket enter his vehicle and drive away.”

In recent months the town has seen a series of unlocked vehicles stolen, according to police.

Last week, Westfield Police arrested a man in connection with the theft of a truck stolen from the 1200 block of South Avenue West. That truck stolen Nov. 11, 2019 was locked, police said.
