The Westfield Art Association (WAA) will host a presentation on the relationship between visual and musical art on Sunday, Feb. 26, from 1p.m. to4 p.m. in Patton Hall at the First Congregational Church of Westfield, located at 125 Elmer Street. This event is free and open to all.

As the oldest arts organization in the state, the WAA is now in its 95th season of bringing engaging arts events to the Westfield community. We launched of our Making Connections lecture series last February with a presentation on Art & Poetry by professor, poet and artist Michelle Greco.

In this second installment of our Making Connections series, we will take a look at Art & Music with accomplished lecturer, concert organist and musical irector Dr. Barbara Thomson, of Mountainside.

Dr. Thomson is Organist at Rutgers University, Monmouth Reform Temple, and First Congregational Church of Westfield, where she also Musical Director. As an organist, she has performed across the US and Europe, including at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, Lincoln Center in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. If you have attended concerts of the Westfield Symphony, you may have heard one of her insightful pre-performance lectures, or read her reviews as the classical music critic for the Westfield Leader/Scotch Plains Times.

Although visual and musical art are typically seen as two distinct forms of expression, Dr. Thomson will illustrate how they can inform each other beautifully. This afternoon event will focus on listening and visual association based on musical passages. Attendees will also participate in a guided art-making session... catch the muse! Light refreshments will be served.

The WAA gratefully acknowledges receipt of a generous grant from the Westfield Foundation that makes this event possible.

Since 1922, the Westfield Art Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, completely volunteer organization, has provided art education and public exhibitions, and continues today to actively encourage its many members in the pursuit of individual artistic goals and growth. All mediums. All experience levels. All welcome. For more information, to donate, or to become a member, please visit westfieldartassociation.org.
