Medicaid is Our Lifeline

Dear Editor,

My adult daughter lives with the challenges of autism and seizures. For more than half her life, Medicaid has provided vital services—to her and our family. Because of Medicaid, my daughter has attended work training programs and day habilitation programs, which teach her important life skills so that she can live as independently as possible.

The proposals in Congress to cut Medicaid benefits would be disastrous for families like mine.  Medicaid is so much more than health insurance. Without Medicaid, one parent would have to be home to take care of an adult with disabilities. Quitting a job might be an option for some families, but for single parents, it would destroy the fabric of their family.

Reducing Medicaid benefits would result in more institutionalization of our vulnerable adults because without these services, guardians would no longer be able to care for their loved ones in their homes. People with disabilities would be unable to participate in community life without the supports that Medicaid provides.

Medicaid is our lifeline.

With Medicaid, my daughter has a life that matters. She is able to go out in the community with appropriate supports and to be a contributing member of society. Without Medicaid, she would be deprived of programs that enable her to have a life just like a person who has no disability. Please tell Congress to save our lifeline!
