Golf is a sport that is extremely popular among all ages. However, as we age, joints can get stiffer and muscles tend to get less flexible and even weaken, which may cause a restricted golf swing. When this terrible triad occurs, you place yourself at risk of injuring one or various structures of the body.
Golf is a sport that requires a combination of adequate mobility, flexibility and strength. As the weather improves and people begin to go to their favorite driving range or golf course, I commonly see an increase in low back pain and hip pain, as well as other conditions amongst recreational golfers.
In order to have an effective golf swing, there are several key components that I have been able to identify and restore for my patients. First, having good flexibility of your hips and wrist is very important, especially your hip rotators.
Secondly, having good trunk mobility, specifically the thoracic and lumbar spine is critical. This is where rotation occurs for your swing, and more importantly where the power of the swing occurs.
Finally, good hip strength and core stability is necessary. Most of the power of our swing comes from our hips and core stability protects our spine from disaster. Also proper wrist flexibility allows for the “pop” from the head of that golf club.
When one lacks one of these key components, the golf swing can be ineffective, and put your body at risk for injury. As we age, one or more of these key components can deteriorate, causing injury.
Even though this is a brief synopsis of some key components to an effective golf swing, there are some effective exercises to help prepare your body for an upcoming match. Stretching your hamstrings, piriformis, hip rotators, wrist flexors and extensors, and posterior capsule of the shoulder can help the body be flexible so you can have an effective swing.
If you have tightness in your thoracic and lumbar spine (mid and low back), having manual treatment by a physical therapist is an effect way to restore the necessary mobility, such as extension and rotation for an effective golf swing. Finally, working on strengthening your gluteal muscles, deep hip rotators, and your core such as your abdominals and obliques give you the power of the swing.
There are many other components involved in developing an effective golf swing, but the hips, spine and wrists are the foundation.
