SCOTCH PLAINS, N.J. -- Union Catholic's Performing Arts Company will open its Spring Musical "Spamalot'' on Friday night, April 5.

"Spamalot'' will be performed at UC on April 5, 6, 12, and 13 at 7:00 p.m., and on April 7 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at showtix4u.com and at the box office before all performances.

Spamalot is a musical comedy adapted from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Like the motion picture, it is a highly irreverent parody of the Arthurian legend, but it differs from the film in many ways. The original 2005 Broadway production, directed by Mike Nichols, received 14 Tony Awards nominations, winning in three categories, including Best Musical. During its initial run of 1,575 performances, it was seen by more than two million people and grossed over $175 million

Edward Sagendorf (UC Class of '07), co-director with Maryann C. Carolan (UC Class of 1986), is excited to raise the curtain.

"It has been a while since UC has done a straight comedy,'' said Mr. Sagendorf. "We have had shows in the past that have have funny moments, but this is purely, purely comedy. We were looking at out cast and every year we pick the cast based on our cast and our company and all the talents they all have. We have a lot of characters in the company, and what we liked about Spamalot is that it's really more of an ensemble show, so we really liked that aspect of the show.

"There are so many parts, so a lot of our students have roles. I was big fan of Monty Python, so any fans of the film are going to love the show because it is literally the movie, just set to music. What I also like about this show is that has a really strong message to it, this quest to find your grail," he added. "Every character on that stage is pursuing that grail. That grail can mean a lot of different things, friendship, companionship, a dream job. The audience will leave thinking what  that grail is that they want in life. The heart of the show is that concept.''

Sagendorf praised the work done by the tech crew.

"The tech crew has done an unbelievable job,'' he said. "We have a lot of students who have lived in that auditorium the past few weekends building the set, and it is just outstanding. This is a challenging show, and as always they have risen to the challenge.''
