WESTFIELD, NJ – A growler is a jug used to transport beer, and a local couple set to open a microbrewery on South Avenue is making some good noise with its plans to sell beer, including from the old-fashioned style jugs.
Residents Corinne Grant and her husband, Tim Grant, have generated much excitement with their plans to open Lions Roar Brewing Co. at the South Avenue traffic circle. Earlier this month, the Planning Board approved the couple’s application.
Corinne Grant offered the following details to TAPinto Westfield on the much-anticipated plans for the microbrewery in Westfield.
Q. How long have you and your husband lived in Westfield?
Tim and I have lived in town for the past 6 years.
Q. What will be on offer for the public?
Outside of selling beer from the tap, we’ll also be able to sell growlers, six packs and kegs directly to customers. We have no plans to distribute our beer anywhere. We want to be a destination brewery. So if you want to try Lions Roar beer, you have to come to Westfield to get it.
Q. Can you tell me why you picked 517-519 South Ave. West for the home of Lions Roar Brewing Co?
Early on we knew we wanted to be located on the south side of town. It just seemed like the perfect fit for us. When we first walked through our location, we immediately saw the potential it had to carry out our vision. We’re a short walk down East Broad Street from the north side and very accessible from the train station.
Q. When do you anticipate the new spot will open, approximately?
We hope to be open towards the end of the year. Our licensing approvals take some time to get back, so that’s our biggest hurdle.
Q. The laws regulating food at microbreweries are ever-changing. What type of food will there be at Lions Roar Brewing Co.?
Microbreweries in New Jersey are not allowed to serve food. However, people can bring their own food in or get it delivered. It’s a great opportunity to work with the town’s restaurants and also provide them with a lot of exposure to people visiting from out-of-town.
