CLARK, NJ – Clark Recreation Director Ralph Bernardo presented the third annual “Volunteer of the Year” award to Scott McCabe at Tuesday evening’s township council meeting.

“So many residents offer their services and volunteer their time to help the recreation department throughout the year,” said Bernardo.  “There’s not much we can do to show how much we appreciate the help except to publicly recognize these individual volunteers.”

Bernardo explained that when McCabe (Supervisor of Clark’s Department of Public Works) is not working for the town, he jumps at the opportunity to help in other ways.  According to Bernardo, McCabe plays a huge part in the township’s annual tree lighting event.  Not only does he set up the front of the recreation building, but he also helps the boy scouts set up for Toys for Tots.

“He has filled truckloads of toys for the needy, placing Toys for Tots bins throughout the municipal building during the month of December,” said Bernardo.

McCabe also serves as director of the Dr. Wm. Robinson Plantation & Museum.  “Scott took over the entire Robinson Plantation Project from the beginning when it was in dire straits,” said Bernardo.  “He worked countless hours to completely renovate the house, the grounds, and the interior.”

“Scott really brings that place to life,” said Councilwoman Angel Albanese.  “He’s really extremely dedicated.”  Albanese also cited the time McCabe puts in helping the Clark Public Library during their events.

McCabe also lends his time to the preparation of UNICO’s Annual Italian Feast in October.  He and his wife also work throughout the week at the feast, said Bernardo.  “After the conclusion of the feast, Scott heads up a huge cleanup with about 25 cub scouts and parents to walk the grounds... picking up bags and bags of garbage.”

Bernardo went on to list McCabe’s many other contributions to the town, including:

  • Volunteer with for the Clark Volunteer Fire Department for many years.
  • Assisting with the recreation department’s summer camp water days every Thursday.
  • Running the Cub Scout pancake breakfast and pinewood derby
  • Assisting with the Memorial Day Parade and Veterans’ Day Ceremony.

Mayor Sal Bonaccorso thanked McCabe for his dedication to Clark saying, “He has the mind set of someone who ‘does’, someone whose giving as a volunteer… we are very proud to have Scott here.”

“Scott is an asset to the recreation department and the Township of Clark.  He exemplifies the meaning of hard work, dedication, and giving of himself and not expecting anything in return,” said Bernardo.
