CRANFORD - The Union County Sheriff's Office and Policemens Benevolent Association (PBA) Local 108 are hosting a fundraising event on Saturday, September 14 for a sick Union County Sheriff's Officer.
Officer Ashley Kreig, 28, is a life-long resident of Cranford who graduated from the John H. Stamler Police Academy in December of 2016. As a squad leader, she excelled physically in the program. During her free time, she trained and competed in numerous body building events and won many awards. Prior to becoming ill, Officer Kreig was assigned to the Sheriff’s Community Policing Unit where she worked jointly with the Elizabeth Police Department. She was the first female ever assigned by the Sheriff’s office to this unit.
"She's an outstanding officer," said Union County Sheriff Peter Corvelli. "She'd jog seven miles a day, unbelievable cardio, lives the right life and then comes down with this infection. We have officers going to see her every day and we just want her back as quickly as possible."
In October of 2018, Officer Kreig was diagnosed with Autoimmune Encephalitis, and as a result of her illness, Officer Kreig was in intensive care for several weeks. This is a condition that attacks healthy brain cells, which put her in a coma. After several weeks, she turned the corner and showed improvement. Subsequently, she was transferred to a long-term care and rehabilitation facility. Officer Kreig does not have optimal brain function and cannot do the simplest of tasks that we take for granted every day, such as being able to walk or stand on her own, and needs assistance with all of her daily personal needs.
To assist Officer Kreig, a fundraising event will be held at the Knights of Columbus of Union, 1034 Jeanette Ave, Union NJ. Donations are requested, whether it is monetary, event products (i.e. food, drink, paper goods etc.), or any items to be raffled off (spas days, social events, sporting events, etc.) Proceeds from the event will benefit Officer Ashley Kreig directly in her recovery.
"She is part of our family and has been stricken with this infection and we will support her any way we can," added Corvelli. "We're asking the public to come out to wish her well. It's going to be a barbecue and a fun day for everyone to assist with her recovery."
