CLARK, NJ - Clark’s award-winning Recreation Director Ralph Bernardo is branching out to share his talents and experience building community-driven programs with another local town.  Garwood has hired Bernardo as their part-time Recreation Director.

According to Bernardo, this position will require only five to seven hours a week to manage.  “I am so excited to bring the knowledge and experiences I have in this field to Garwood,” he said.

Bernardo’s appointment is not a shared-service or merging of the two towns’ programs according to a statement released by Garwood’s Borough Administrator/Municipal Clerk Christina Ariemmapdf. “Garwood did not hire him through a shared service with Clark nor is Garwood Recreation merging with Clark Recreation.  Mr. Bernardo is an employee of the Borough of Garwood.”

In the same announcement Ariemma listed Bernardo’s extensive record of recreation related awards over his career and mentioned what he will bring to the town. “Garwood will…maintain its own programs as it has in the past and will be adding many new programs with Mr. Bernardo.”

Bernardo says his role in Garwood is to oversee the basketball and soccer programs, introduce new programs and to further develop the summer recreation program.   To parents in Clark worried about what that means for the Clark Recreation Summer Camp, Bernardo said there is a full-time person that runs the program in Garwood day to day.

“This position doesn’t include all the annual community events, pool, senior citizens, Municipal Alliance and more that I do in Clark it really is about Recreation programming,” said Bernardo.  “I’m looking forward to bringing some new programs to the town, especially to kids, to give them some things to do afterschool.”

Garwood Mayor Sara Todisco expressed her thoughts about Bernardo coming to town on her Facebook page Friday.  “I look forward to working with Mr. Bernardo and making appointments to the Recreation Committee at our Re-Organization meeting this Monday. I thank the past volunteers of the Recreation Commission and also thank the 2020 Recreation Committee volunteers. There is much fun and learning in store for Garwood's youth this year!”

A letter announcing Bernardo’s hire was sent home with Garwood students on Friday.
