CLARK, NJ — The Arthur L. Johnson High School 2020 – 2021 Winter Athletic Awards was held in the ALJ Auditorium on March 23, 2021. The evening, sponsored by the Crusader Athletic Booster Club, recognizes each team.

During the evening coaches highlight their team members while presenting athletes with letters and awards. According to Athletic Director Gus Kalikas over 123 varsity athletic letters were handed out throughout the evening, as participation in athletics at ALJ continues to grow.

Kalikas also awarded the 2020 – 2021 Winter Student Athlete Award to Matthew Hartzler. Kalikas said this award is given out each season to a student athlete that is not only a champion on the field, but in the classroom as well.  Hartzler currently holds a 4.6491 GPA and is ranked #2 in the ALJ senior class).

Every winter the Crusader GPA Challenge is awarded to the team that finished with the highest overall GPA of all fall athletic teams. The recipients are presented with certificates, have their team memorialized on a plaque, and are invited for Breakfast with the A.D.

This year's 2020 – 2021 Winter Season award went to the Crusader girls’ basketball beam with a GPA of 3.979. Team members include:

The Best Teammate Award is given out seasonally to one member from each athletic team that best exhibits the characteristics of a good teammate with their upbeat attitudes and outstanding character. These athletes positively influence the team’s culture while always supporting teammates and promoting team unity. The 2020 – 2021 Winter Season Best Teammate Award Winners were: 

  • Boys’ Basketball — Anthony Ferreira

  • Girls Basketball — Ashley Samsel

  • Ice Hockey — Michael DeGregorio

  • Boys’ Winter Track & Field — Matthew Zukowski

  • Girls’ Winter Track & Field — Carly Tarentino

  • Swimming — Emmalie Pikula

  • Bowling — Gary King

  • Cheerleading — Katie Sapia

At the end of the awards program, the 2020 – 2021 Winter Most Valuable Players were announced by team:

  • Boys’ Basketball — Augustine Puentes

  • Girls Basketball — Dominika Kosiek

  • Ice Hockey — Anthony Morreale

  • Boys’ Winter Track & Field — Gregory Lordi

  • Girls’ Winter Track & Field — Rai Goodman

  • Swimming — Kaitlyn O’Neill

  • Bowling — Matthew Hartzler

  • Cheerleading — Darby Brown

“Once again, our Winter Athletic Awards Program was a success as it allows the district, administration, and coaches the opportunity to acknowledge a wonderful season as well as recognize both student athletes and their parents alike for all that they have accomplished this past fall athletic season,” said Kalikas
