CLARK, NJ – A number of Arthur L. Johnson High School teams were in tournament action over the week.
Johnson defeated Madison, 55-41, on Monday, Dec. 23. The Crusaders used a 25-13 fourth quarter to pull away. Aidan Laughery led Johnson with 20 points and Anthony Ferreira added 11. Johnson dropped its first game of the season in a 70-45 loss to Westfield in the John “Butch” Kowal Holiday Tournament on Friday, Dec. 27 at Rahway. Agustine Puentes led Johnson with 18 points to go along with eight assists.
Boys Ice Hockey
Johnson fell to 4-2 after losing to Scotch Plains-Fanwood, 4-1, on Dec. 23. SPF scored four first-period goals. Anthony Morreale scored on assists from Nick Galati and Mike Midrano in the second period. Johnson goalie Nick Sofiankois made 31 saves.
Following an 89-65 loss to East Orange on Dec. 23, Johnson bounced back with a 49-44 win over South Plainfield in the Crusader Tournament on Friday, Dec. 27. Johnson used an 18-9 fourth quarter for the win. Chelsea Kessock and Katie Ledden put in 13 points apiece for Johnson. Ashley Samsel added 11 points for the Crusaders. Johnson then lost to North Hunterdon, 43-27, in the tournament’s championship game on Saturday, Dec. 28. Johnson led 17-14 at halftime before the Lions outscored the Crusaders 29-10 in the second half. Samsel put in a team-high 11 points.
Johnson tied for seventh place with 59 points at the Rahway Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 28. Jordan Downey won at 195 pounds by pin at 3:28. Rahway won the tournament with 185 points.
