CLARK, NJ – The Arthur L. Johnson High School winter sports teams had another busy week of play.
The Crusaders rolled past Koinonia, 56-26, on Tuesday, Jan. 21. In a game that saw 10 Johnson players put in points, Matt O’Conner led the way with nine points.
Johnson saw its five-game winning streak snapped in a 69-55 home loss to Hillside on Thursday, Jan. 23.
Hillside led 41-30 at halftime. Aidan Laughery led the Crusaders with 14 points. Anthony Ferreira added 13 points and O’Conner made three blocks.
Hillside had four players finish in double figures, led by Kalleem Lambert’s 18 points to go along with eight assists.
Johnson (8-5) bounced back with a 56-49 victory at North Plainfield on Saturday, Jan. 25. O’Conner and Agustine Puentes both finished with a double-double. O’Conner totaled 18 points and 11 rebounds to go with six assists, two steals and a block, while Puentes had 18 points, 11 assists, five rebounds and two steals.
Johnson will play at Roselle on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
Coming off a four-point loss to Dayton, Johnson dropped a 39-34 game to Gov. Livingston on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Dominka Kosiek finished with a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four blocks and three steals for Johnson. Katie Ledden added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Crusaders.
Skylar Dowling led Gov. Livingston with 18 points.
Johnson lost its third in a row in a 57-25 defeat to New Providence on Thursday, Jan. 23. Ashley Samsel led the Crusaders with nine points.
Johnson cruised past Rahway, 47-14, on Saturday, Jan. 25. The Crusaders, now 4-9 on the season, led 24-2 after one quarter. Ledden finished with a game-high 18 points.
Johnson takes on Union Catholic on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
Seventh-seeded Johnson lost to second-seeded and eventual county tournament runner-up Westfield in the first round of the Union County Tournament, 7-2, on Monday, Jan. 20 at Warinanco Park.
Westfield put in four first-period goals. Mike Midrano and Adrian Skiba led the Crusaders with a goal apiece, and Nick Galati had an assist. Johnson goalie Nick Sofianakos made 33 saves.
The 10-3 Crusaders bounced back with a 5-3 victory over Newark East Side on Thursday, Jan. 23. Galati, Skiba, Joe Nudo, Richard Ledden and Anthony Morreale scored for the Crusaders. Morreale had two assists and goalie Mike Wichur made 13 saves.
Johnson lost a 40-36 match to Colonia on Wednesday, Jan. 22. A number of Crusaders earned victories. Matthew Lordi earned a pin in 2:55 at 106 pounds, Nicholas Mitichell had a 16-15 decision at 120, Nicholas Pipala pinned his opponent in 27 seconds at 126, Nicholas Jacewitz won by forfeit at 132, Christopher Manning pinned his opponent in 3:07 at 138 and Jordan Downey pinned his Colonia opponent in 44 seconds at 182.
Johnson (1-11) lost to Rahway, 62-15, on Friday, Jan. 24. Three Crusaders picked up victories in the match. Pipala pinned his opponent in 4:59 at 126, Manning had a 12-8 decision victory at 138 and 195-pounder Griffin Jones pinned his opponent in 4:16.
