CLARK, NJ – As the Arthur L. Johnson High School winter sports teams get ready for the peak of the season, let’s take a look back at how the week went.

Boys Basketball

The Crusaders defeated Brearley 62-51 on Tuesday, Feb. 11. Johnson used a 35-28 second half to build a double-digit lead. Matthew O’Connor led the team with 23 points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Agustine Puentes added 15 points and Robert Lukasiewicz finished with 10 points.

Johnson then defeated Middlesex on the road, 58-53, on Thursday, Feb. 13. Aidan Laughery led the Crusaders with a game-high 16 points. O’Connor had a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds, and Anthony Ferreira finished with 13 points.

Johnson, as the 19th seed, upset sixth-seeded Union Catholic, 80-61, in the preliminary round of the Union County Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 15.

The Crusaders improved to 14-6 and have now won six straight games dating back to Jan. 30.

In the win over Union Catholic, Johnson raced out to a 17-4 lead after one quarter. O’Connor posted a triple-double of 26 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists to go with five blocks. Joseph Carney added 15 points, Laughery had 14 points, 11 rebounds and six assists and Ferreira finished with 10 points.

Johnson will take on 14th-seeded Cranford in the UCT first round on Feb. 19 at Cranford at 7 p.m.

Ice Hockey

Johnson (12-5-1) lost to Toms River East, 6-0, on Friday, Feb. 14. Armone Markland led Toms River East with two goals. Following a game against Gov. Livingston on Monday, Feb. 17, the Crusaders, as the top seed, will take on fourth-seeded Kearny in the semifinals of the McMullen Cup on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Warinanco Park. The winner will go up against either second-seeded Dayton or third-seeded Frisch.

Girls Basketball

Johnson defeated Carteret at home, 46-25, on Wednesday, Feb. 12. The Crusaders built a comfortable lead with a 24-6 first quarter. Katie Ledden finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds, Lily Gull added 11 points and Ashley Samsel put in 10 points for Johnson.

The Crusaders (9-12) fell to Cranford, 51-41, on Friday, Feb. 14. Dominka Kosiek had a monster game for Johnson with 12 points, 22 rebounds and three steals. Ledden had 18 rebounds and seven blocks.

Ninth-seeded Johnson will meet eighth-seeded Elizabeth on Tuesday, Feb. 18 in the Union County Tournament first round.
