CLARK, NJ – It was another busy week for the Arthur L. Johnson High School winter sports teams.

Boys Basketball

Johnson edged Gov. Livingston, 47-46, on Thursday, Jan. 30, improving to 9-6 on the season.

Aidan Laughery, who finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds, had an offensive rebound and assist to Joe Carney with five seconds left to give the Crusaders the lead. Agustine Puentes then made 1-of-2 at the line to seal the victory.

Anthony Ferreira added 10 points for Johnson.

The Crusaders rallied from a 16-2 deficit after one quarter. Johnson used a 33-19 second half to come back and win.

Johnson lost to Roselle, 32-31, on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Roselle used a 19-11 fourth quarter to rally. Laughery finished with seven points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.

Johnson will host Dayton Thursday night at 7.

Ice Hockey

Johnson shut out Bayonne, 5-0, on Wednesday, Jan. 29. The Crusaders netted three goals in the third period. Nick Galati led Johnson with three goals, Anthony Morreale and Mike Midrano both scored and Galati, Richard Ledden and Joe Nudo had assists.

The Crusaders (11-3-1) tied Frisch, 3-3, on Thursday, Jan. 30. Morreale, Midrano and Joe Walsh scored for Johnson. Morreale had two assists, Nudo and Matt Bellucci had assists and goalie Nick Sofianakos made 25 saves.

Johnson takes on West Orange on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at Warinanco Park.

Girls Basketball

Johnson lost to Union Catholic by a 60-42 score on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Union Catholic raced out to a 24-3 lead after one quarter. Katie Ledden led the Crusaders with 23 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and a block, and Dominka Kosiek added nine points, nine rebounds and two steals.

The Crusaders bounced back with a 54-13 win over Union on Thursday, Jan. 30. Johnson led 26-4 at the end of the first quarter. Ledden had another dominant performance with 23 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals.

The Crusaders (6-10) got past Brearley, 57-34, on Saturday, Feb. 1. The Crusaders used a 25-7 second quarter to build a 37-13 halftime advantage. Ledden led three double-figure scorers with 18 points. Ashley Samsel chipped in with 12 points and Kosiek finished with 11.


Johnson (1-14) lost to Woodbridge, 61-9, on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Matthew Lordi won a 6-0 decision at 106 pounds and Jake Vito won via forfeit at 113. The Crusaders lost to St. Thomas Aquinas (71-6) and Plainfield (51-21) in a tri-match on Jan. 28.

Johnson takes on Roselle Park on Monday, Feb. 3.
