CLARK, NJ – It was another busy week for the Arthur L. Johnson High School winter sports teams.

Boys Basketball

Johnson defeated Dayton, 56-46, on Thursday, Feb. 6. The Crusaders used a 14-6 third quarter to take control. Aidan Laughery led the team with 16 points to go with eight rebounds. Matthew O’Connor added 14 points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Agustine Puentes put in eight points, dished out four assists and made four steals.

Johnson extended its winning streak to three games with an 80-58 home win over Roselle Park on Saturday, Feb. 8, improving to 11-6 on the season. The Crusaders led 20-8 after one quarter. Laughery led three double-figure scorers with 17 points, O’Connor had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds and Joseph Carney had 10 points.

Johnson will honor its seniors as it takes on Brearley on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

Ice Hockey

The Crusaders had a 2-0 shutout victory over West Orange on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Nick Galati and Anthony Morreale scored goals, Matt Bellucci had an assist and goalie Nick Sofianakos made 19 saves.

Johnson (12-4-1) fell to Edison by a 6-4 score on Friday, Feb. 7. The Crusaders had a 40-22 advantage in shots on goal. Galati put in two goals, Morreale had a goal and two assists, Shaun Applin also scored, Mike Midrano had two assists, Luke Texidor and Robert Vill had assists and goalie Mike Wichur made 16 saves.

Girls Basketball

Johnson lost to Summit, 53-40, on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Katie Ledden led the Crusaders with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four blocks and three steals. Lily Gull added 12 points and made five steals and Dominka Kosiek grabbed 11 rebounds and made four steals.

Johnson bounced back with a 46-39 road win over Scotch Plains-Fanwood on Thursday, Feb. 6. The Crusaders outscored SP-F 15-5 in the third quarter. Ledden had a strong performance of 26 points, seven blocks, six rebounds and three steals.

Johnson (8-11) defeated Roselle Catholic, 50-43, on Saturday, Feb. 8. The Crusaders outscored Roselle Catholic 33-24 in the second half. For the Crusaders, Ashley Samsel scored 15 points, Angela Aromondo totaled 13 points, Ledden had eight rebounds and nine blocks and Kosiek had eight rebounds, four blocks and four steals.

Johnson takes on Carteret on Senior Night on Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m.


Johnson lost to Roselle Park, 51-30, on Monday, Feb. 3. Nichola Pipala pinned in 3:09 at 126, James Lordi pinned in 3:29 at 132, Christopher Manning won by forfeit at 138, David DiFulvio won by fall in 5:23 at 160 and Jordan Downey pinned in 5:19 at 182.

The Crusaders (2-15) defeated Summit, 45-27, on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Matthew Lordi pinned in 1:01 at 106, Jake Vito (113) and Nicholas Mitichell (120) won by forfeit, Manning won an 11-9 decision at 132, Steven Acosta won by forfeit at 152, DiFulvio pinned in 17 seconds at 160, Griffin Jones pinned in seven seconds at 170 and Jordan Downey pinned in 1:07 at 195.
