CLARK, NJ – As the winter sports season reaches its peak, let’s take a look to see how the week went for the Arthur L. Johnson High School teams.
In its final tune-up for the state tournament, Johnson edged Metuchen, 56-51, in a double-overtime thriller on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
The Crusaders outscored Metuchen 10-5 in the second OT. Matt O’Connor posted a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead Johnson.
Johnson improved to 15-8 on the season. The Cruaders, as the eighth seed, will match up against ninth-seeded Rumson-Fair Haven in the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 2 tournament first round on March 3 at Johnson at 7 p.m.
Following its McMullen Cup title, Johnson, as the 21-seed, went up against 12th-seeded Montville in the preliminary round of the NJSIAA Public C tournament on Monday, Feb. 24.
The Crusaders saw their season come to an end following a 4-1 loss to the Mustangs. Anthony Jacobs scored for Johnson and goalie Nick Sofianakos made 45 saves. Robert Bio, Brendan Perretta, Danny Scheine and Connor Perez all put in goals for Montville. Montville ultimately fell to Manasquan, the fifth seed, in the next round.
Johnson concludes its season at 14-6-1.
Johnson (10-14) lost to Bridgewater-Raritan, 52-28, on Wednesday, Feb. 25. B-R took a 16-8 lead after one quarter and cruised from that point. Kattie Ledden and Ashley Samsel put in seven points apiece for the Crusaders. Ledden grabbed seven rebounds and Dominka Kosiek had seven rebounds.
