SPOTSWOOD, NJ - A 12-run first inning solidified the Spotswood High School varsity's softball team's fourth straight victory on Monday, defeating Mother Seton Regional High School 19-1. Spotswood added three runs in the second and four in the third behind the big bats of Erin Coffey and Cynthia Rucinski. Coffey cracked two singles, a double and a home run for six RBIs. Rucinski had two singles, a triple, and a home run for five RBIs. Diana Rucinski got the win on the mound giving up one run on two hits and striking out four batters. Alex Diaz closed out the game giving up one hit and striking out five. Diaz also had two singles and two stolen bases. Emily Yatsko had two singles. Alice Melvin, Lexi Brown, Gianna Perez, Lauren Guyette, Gabby Diaz and Jenna Dumanski all hit singles. Jenn Pokropinski had a single and a double. 

Mother Seton had singles from Julie Witheridge, Julia Scafidil and Makayla Martinez. Martinez had a long afternoon on the mound, giving up 12 runs on eight hits and striking out one. Scafidi relieved Martinez on the mound after the first inning and gave up seven runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Mother Seton is winless in its first three games.

Spotswood, under new head varsity softball coach Vincent Vizzi, has won its first four games to start the 2021 season. The Chargers host Metuchen High School on Wednesday. Metuchen is undefeated to start the season as well. First pitch is at 4 p.m. at the Spotswood High School Varsity Softball Field.
