COCONUT CREEK, FL – For five decades, members of Women’s Club of Coconut Creek have come together in social events that also served as community projects intended to raise money for local causes.

Their latest project – Butterfly Garden Tour on March 4 – is a fundraiser for the group’s annual scholarship fund for high school students living in Coconut Creek.

Those attending will visit 12 private yards, farms, and “secret” gardens across Coconut Creek.

“There’s something eclectic here for everyone,” said Laura McDermott Matheric, the club’s president.

The event is the newest for the oldest civic organization in the city - a group that prides itself on supporting and volunteering for everything from youth activities, such as Police Explorers and flag football, to the annual Butterfly Festival, Festival of Lights, and Santa’s Brunch for children.

“We try to do fun activities to engage the community,” Matheric added.**BULLSEYE

Kyshun Nicholas is the co-chair of Butterfly Garden Tour and a three-year member of the club, which has about 80 members.

“I joined because I’m a single-mother, I work, and I wanted to do something for myself and give back to the community,” she said.

Nicholas said the Butterfly Garden Tour will be a self-guided tour through a variety of landscapes.**STANDARD

The tour from 9-1 p.m. will begin at Coconut Creek Government Center, where participants will receive a map to the gardens, then travel throughout the city to see them, and finally meet up at Veteran's Park and the city's Hometown Market.

“Each stop is different – it’s a collection of different ideas,” Nicholas said.

So far, about 70 people have signed up, and organizers hope to draw 250 people to the tour.**BULLSEYE

“It’s an important event,” Nicholas said. “Coconut Creek is the butterfly capital and our event is all about butterfly gardens and sustainability.”
