CORAL SPRINGS, FL – When Broward County public schools reopen this August, students will return to old-fashion, class-based learning, school superintendent Robert Runcie said Wednesday.

The 2021-2022 school year will open “with 100 percent, in-person, traditional, face-to-face instruction at all schools this coming fall,” he said in a short video to parents.

Despite the pandemic showing no signs of ending any time soon, Runcie added: “There will be no blended, hybrid, remote learning option.”

Those wanting to continue on with e-learning will have to do so with the Florida Department of Education virtual school program, Runcie said.

He said the decision to go back to traditional learning was based on the “success” of the district’s Covid-19 safety protocols, the availability of the vaccine for teachers and staff, and on “academic, social and emotional challenges” of many students who had a hard time learning virtually.

He said more information will be made available in the coming weeks.

School districts across the nation have made similar decisions in recent days and weeks, including Miami-Dade public schools.
