CORAL SPRINGS, FL – Joi Guarino was ready to lift, lung and sweat.

Tuesday was the first day gyms and fitness studios could re-open in Broward County since the coronavirus shutdown, and Guarino wasted no time to sign up for a private lesson at Spin City Indoor Cycle & Fitness in Coral Springs.

“I’ve missed it,” said Guarino, of Parkland, who has done virtual fitness classes in recent weeks. “There’s nothing like being in the gym and working out. It’s so much better in person.”

She was among a dozen or so patrons who returned to one-on-one sessions and small classes at the small studio on Sample Road.

Welcoming them back was the studio owner Lubov Baugh, who did virtual workouts with her patrons after she had to close down her studio in mid-March.

“It feels good to be back,” Baugh said.

But her patrons returned to a different place.

New county guidelines require gym patrons to cover their faces when they aren’t working out or cooling down, and checking their temperature when they enter to make sure they aren’t above 100.4 degrees.

The gym equipment also must be spaced out to allow for at least 10 feet of distancing. In addition, patrons have to sanitize each machine and piece of equipment after use.

For Baugh, it’s a lot of changes, but she said they are manageable, and she understands the new reality of living in the pandemic.

During the shutdown, she said most of her patrons stayed with her and took virtual classes, paying membership fees and packages at her studio which attracts a lot of women.

She expects to continue with Zoom classes which have been popular with stay-at-home mothers.

Still, the home workouts can only go so far, and her studio’s equipment is essential for many workouts, she said.

“We still need a place to see each other,” Baugh said.

Guarino is looking forward to getting back on track with her twice-a-week, 45-minute sessions focused on doing lunges, step-up routines, and lifting weights.

“I love my workouts,” she said.
