CORAL SPRINGS, FL – Coral Springs has renamed its police department’s gun range in honor of late Sgt. Robert “Bob” Behan who spent nearly 40 years at the department and passed away suddenly last year.

In a ceremony Sunday at the range in Coral Springs, dozens of police administrators, city officials, and Behan’s family members remembered his service to the city and his many unique qualities.

“Bob was a prankster who took firearms training very seriously,” said Coral Springs Vice Mayor Joy Carter, who attended the socially distanced ceremony. “He was loved by many and missed by all. The renaming dedication was very fitting for his memory.”

Behan started working at the department in 1980 as a community service aide, according to his obituary. He served in various divisions over the decades, including at the gun range where he was a range master.

Behan’s brother, Patrick, was killed in the line of duty in 1990, while serving as a deputy sheriff with the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the obituary said.

The renaming ceremony was supposed to happen in May but got pushed back to the one-year anniversary of Behan’s passing, Carter said.
