CORAL SPRINGS, FL – The 24-year-old woman allegedly filled her shopping cart at Walmart in Coral Springs with $649 worth of cosmetics and groceries this week, and then tried to walk out without paying, a police report said.
The store’s asset protection officer, along with police, stopped Jessica Layne as she was leaving the store at 6001 Coral Ridge Drive and arrested her on charges of petit theft and probation violation (she was on probation for a heroin possession charge).
It’s not the first the Coconut Creek resident has been accused of shoplifting, the report said.
She was also convicted of petit theft in 2015 and 2018. If convicted for the incident at Walmart on Tuesday, she would face a felony since this would be her third theft offense.
Layne caught the attention of the store’s staff on the camera system as she put merchandise from the cosmetics department into her bag and cart, and then walked past the cash register and headed for the exit, the report said.
Walmart told police it wanted to prosecute against Layne.
Layne was at Broward Jail on Wednesday facing a $750 bond for the theft charge and no bond for the probation violations, records show.
