CORAL SPRINGS, FL – Since she was 2 years old, Alana Scheuerer has performed on a stage as a dancer, winning over crowds with her jazz, ballet, and tap skills.

Now 23, the Coral Springs resident is soon going to bring her dancing abilities, as well as a passion for helping others through the arts, to a much bigger stage: the Miss Florida competition.

In front of judges, fans, and many others, Scheuerer, who is now Miss St. Petersburg, plans to promote her vision that dancing, as a form of art, can bring people together and celebrate their differences and cultures.

“I’ve never stopped dancing,” Scheuerer said Tuesday. “It’s the ultimate way to express yourself and cut loose.”

Scheuerer grew up in Coral Springs, attending Maplewood Elementary, Sawgrass Springs Middle School, and Coral Glades High School. She went on to graduate from Florida State University and complete a master’s degree in American dance studies.

Her goal, she said, is to run an arts organization.

And she hopes competing in the Miss Florida pageant opens up new contacts and opportunities to land her dream job.

“There’s a real power behind the arts and what it can do,” she said.

Dancing has done a lot for Scheuerer and kept her focused on school and a career through hard times in her life, said her mother, Marisa Mirasola.

Mirasola, who danced for much of her life as well, used to bring Scheuerer when she was a baby to drill team workouts at a high school in Melbourne, where Scheuerer was born. Mirasola was the team’s coach.

“Dancing has always been a part of her life. She’s always been a natural at it,” Mirasola said.

When Scheuerer competes in the Miss Florida competition on June 26, it won’t be her first appearance there.

She made it to the pageant’s top 10 list in 2019, she said.

And earlier that year, Scheuerer was crowned Miss Tallahassee.

These days, she’s a dance education instructor at Xpress Yourself Dance Studio in Coral Springs.

She’s also preparing for the big event by reading up on current events and planning her “business plan” on how she would promote the arts if she wins.

If she wins, she’ll compete in the Miss America competition.

“I grew up competing,” she said. “I’m ready.”
