CORAL SPRINGS, FL - On July 13, the City of Coral Springs Museum of Art and Coral Springs Police Department partnered up to provide educational opportunities for children in the Summer Breakspot Program, a police-run camp for underserved youth.

As COVID-19 caused summer program cancelations across the nation, state and city, the Coral Springs Museum of Art quickly pivoted their educational strategies and launched their first-ever virtual summer camp programZoom into the Studio, which will continue through August 14, 2020. At the same time, the Police Department’s Summer Breakspot Program was required to cancel their classes due to the global health crisis.

Committed to serving the community, especially during these difficult times, the Museum of Art offered their summer programZoom into the Studio, to the Police Department’s Summer Breakspot Program granting six underprivileged children with live and interactive educational art classes every day. While these classes require students to purchase supplies prior to the start of the session, the Coral Springs Police Department provided the supplies for their enrolled students, ensuring these families were not overwhelmed with any financial burdens related to the courses.

Regarding the partnership, Community Involvement Coordinator Monica Vargas said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has had tremendous consequences on the lives of children, especially in our underserved communities. We have a responsibility to our Coral Springs families, and it is critical that we find ways to help them overcome and thrive throughout this crisis. Joining forces with the Coral Springs Museum of Art has been instrumental to ensure the continuation of our programming, which helps sustain education for disadvantaged youth throughout the summer.”

The Coral Springs Police Department Community Involvement Unit is committed to actively engaging with the city’s youth to build stronger relationships in the community. Through their Summer Breakspot Program, children enrolled receive mentoring, education, sports, arts and crafts and nutritious meals through the 6-week program. Although COVID-19 limited some of those activities, the unit looks forward to a bigger and better program next summer.
