CORAL SPRINGS, FL – All this week, the visiting Tibetan Buddhist monks of the Drepung Gomang Monastery have slowly built a sand mandala as part of their visit to Coral Springs Museum of Art in Coral Springs.
The intricate construction of the mandala -- made out of millions of colored grains of sand and laid out in patterns and diagrams representing sacred textual Buddhist imagery – has drawn much attention from visitors who wanted a first-hand look at traditional Tibetan Buddhist teachings and artistic expression.
On Sunday, the mandala’s deconstruction will no doubt attract just as much response.
The monks will destroy the sand design through a sacred ceremony and then distribute some of the sand to those in attendance. The remaining sand will be poured into a moving waterway behind the museum, an act believed to spread blessings to the local community.
The event will take place at 1 pm.
