CORAL SPRINGS, FL – Publix is becoming the latest grocery chain to require masks to be worn inside its stores, even though residents in Coral Springs and Broward County are already ordered to wear masks in public places “where social distancing cannot be met.”

The chain said Thursday that starting on July 21, customers are required to use facial coverings over their noses and mouths while inside its stores.

Walmart and Sam’s Club also have announced that face coverings will be required at their stores, starting July 20.

In a statement on its website, Walmart asked everyone to comply, even those who choose not to wear masks:

“As we have seen in states and municipalities with mask mandates, virtually everyone either brings a mask or readily complies with the requirement, and we anticipate that to happen in other areas as well.

“We know some people have differing opinions on this topic. We also recognize the role we can play to help protect the health and well-being of the communities we serve by following the evolving guidance of health officials like the CDC. We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of our customers and members in wearing face coverings to protect their safety and the safety of our associates.”

The requirements come as COVID-19 cases have spiked in Florida and other states. See our latest data here.
