An elderly man held at Broward County Jail died this week after testing positive for coronavirus (COVID-19), Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

The inmate was hospitalized at Northwest Medical Center in Margate, where he was tested for coronavirus, confirmed positive on April 1, and died on Tuesday. Detectives said the inmate suffered from pre-existing medical conditions, and no foul play is suspected.

The inmate’s name and arrest information were not released to protect his medical privacy, sheriff’s office said.

According to the sheriff’s office, the inmate arrived at the jail in mid-March, showing no signs of coronavirus.  On March 31, during a routine screening, the inmate refused a medical test (not related to coronavirus) which was recommended by the jail’s healthcare staff. As a result, he was taken to the jail’s infirmary and then to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.

The Broward Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of the inmate’s death.

The sheriff’s office homicide detectives continue investigating his death.
