CORAL SPRINGS, FL – A teenage Publix employee was pushing a shopping cart in a parking lot over the weekend when a 28-year-old man allegedly ran toward her and punched her in the face – for no known reason, a police report said.

The man accused in the Saturday attack, Daquan Scarlett, was arrested and charged with battery and child abuse, the report said. Police said Scarlett is homeless.

The girl, whose age was not provided in the police report, told police she didn’t know Scarlett or why he hit her outside a store. She said after she was struck, Scarlett stood over her and spewed expletives at her.

Police caught up to Scarlett a short time later walking on Coral Ridge Drive.

Police reviewed video surveillance outside the Publix store, whose location was blanked out in the police report, and saw Scarlett running toward the girl and hitting her without provocation.

Scarlett remained Tuesday at Broward County Jail with no bond.
