CORAL SPRINGS, FL - Jalen McKenzie scored 11 points, but none bigger than his two free throws with 3.4 seconds left to give J.P. Taravella High boys' basketball team its first-ever regional quarterfinal win in school history.

The Trojans improved to 19-4 with the 64-62 win over Wellington in the Class 7A regional quarterfinal game in Coral Springs on Thursday night.

“It’s crazy,” said McKenzie, who is a senior. “It’s emotional and I have faith in the team. We played with a lot of heart. I don’t got any words. This win means a lot.”

Not only did Taravella win its first regional game, but they also won the school’s first-ever district title last week. The only time Taravella made it to the regional quarterfinals came in 2005 when they lost to Boyd Anderson, 70-46.

Taravella’s Kerby Dumay and Matt Dolce had 14 and 13 points respectively, while Stephen Mills chipped in with 10.

Taravella will travel to play Forest Hill on Feb. 25 in the regional semifinal.
