CRANFORD, NJ – Kelly McAuliffe and Nick Macchi are Cranford High School’s Athletes of the Week following strong athletic performances in gymnastics and football, respectively.

McAuliffe is the sole senior on this year’s varsity gymnastics team, who earned the title of Union County Champions for the second year in a row thanks to her performance.

“I like the team atmosphere,” McAuliffe said. “It’s a lot of fun every season, we all cheer each other on. Even the other teams, we all know each other.”

McAuliffe was the Union County champion for the balance beam and placed fourth in the all-around for the county.

“Everyone relies on each other most meets,” McAuliffe said. “When you do your best, the team does its best.”

Macchi, a senior on the varsity football team, converted from guard to center.

“The aspect of competing is a lot of fun,” Macchi said. “On the offensive line, all five of us know the guys in the back need us and that pushes us to do our best.”

Macchi anchored the offensive line in a dominant running game during last week’s shut out, 38-0, against the Governor Livingston Highlanders. The Cpugars will face Hillside in a home game this Friday.

“It’s a big game,” Macchi said. “I think that if we play the best we can, we’ll be fine. It’s a big week of practice, so it’s time to get to work.”
