Backyard Herbal Allies Workshop

Please join the Hanson Park Conservancy on Saturday, June 3 at 2:00 PM (rain date: Sunday, June 4) as we welcome herbalist, Debra Roeder Shaw and her program, Backyard Herbal Allies at Hanson Park, 38 Springfield Ave. in Cranford.

Debra will present a 2-hour+ hands-on presentation on wild plant (aka weed) identification, backyard herbal medicine, and instruction on preparation of salves, oils and tinctures.  Techniques for gathering, identifying and preparing our “Green Allies” (dandelion, violet, chickweed, garlic mustard, wood sorrel, etc.) will be discussed and demonstrated.  We will spend time going over the properties of each plant and what they have been used for traditionally and then we will go out and gather (so wear your sneakers!).

Each student will make their own tincture in a glass jar to take home.  Debra will also bring a number of books from her herbal library so students can see the abundance of herbals out there.  The goal is to find alternatives to toxic lawn chemicals and eat our weeds!

Sign-up early on our website,, as registration is limited.  The cost is $20 for members of the Hanson Park Conservancy ($25 for non-members).  Payment is due at time of registration.
